Palliative Care Week at Galway Hospice & Mayo Hospice

Palliative Care Week 2024 – 8th to the 14th of September

To celebrate Palliative Care Week, Galway Hospice and Mayo Hospice are hosting a free open evening, providing an opportunity for anyone who attends to learn more about each hospice and palliative care.

Mayo Hospice open evening: 5pm to 7pm, Tuesday 10th September in Mayo Hospice, Castlebar.

Galway Hospice open evening: 5pm to 7pm, Wednesday 11th September in Galway Hospice, Renmore.

As part of each open evening, we will premiere a “A Day in the Life” video. The aim of these videos is to help provide insight into the day-to-day life within each hospice, featuring a guided tour facilitated by a member of our staff and highlighting many of the various services we provide. Each video will be played at 5:45pm.

Following this, our Therapies Manager Joan Boult will deliver a 10-15 minute presentation. This “Demystifying Palliative Care” presentation will address some common misconceptions about palliative care. We will also have a stand with refreshments, offering opportunities to talk to many of our staff members and other attendees. All are welcome to join us.

‘Let’s Talk Palliative Care’

There will also be a ‘Let’s Talk Palliative Care’ educational event on Thursday, 12th September, at Ard Ri House Hotel, running from 9:30am to 2pm. This event is open to any healthcare worker in palliative care, offering an opportunity for staff to meet, talk, and learn from each other. It is held in conjunction with the HSE Galway and Mayo Roscommon Centres for Nursing and Midwifery Education. If you are interested in attending, please email Joan Kelly at jkelly@galwayhospice.ie

Sharing Brendan’s Story

We are also very grateful to Galway Hospice patient, Brendan O’Byrne, who agreed to share his experience through a beautiful video that we recently produced. This video will be shared on the social media accounts of both the All-Ireland Institute and Galway Hospice. Please refer to either social media account to learn about Brendan’s story and his experience with us.

Palliative Care Week

Palliative Care Week aims to raise awareness of the difference palliative care can make for people with life-limiting conditions, as well as their carers and families throughout the island of Ireland. This year’s theme for Palliative Care Week in Ireland is Palliative Care: ‘You, Me and Palliative Care,’ which emphasises how palliative care affects us all and highlights the importance of community in the provision of palliative care services and supports.

Hospice and palliative care can be misunderstood by many, and these events will give people the opportunity to find out exactly what we do and the experience one can expect when utilising our services.

If you are interested in attending either of our open evenings, please email info@galwayhospice.ie, call 091 770868 or simply turn up on the evening, where you will be met with a warm welcome.
