Education & Research

As an organisation with a huge focus on quality management systems, providing internationally accredited standards of care, the ongoing training and education of our staff is of paramount importance.

Ongoing education and training are fundamental to providing quality care. Individually, through our annual Performance and Professional Development Reviews, we identify any education or training needs for individual staff, and we set priorities for achievement within the following year. Corporately, we provide group in-house training for our staff across a wide range of subjects and topics, such as:

  • Medication management
  • Pain and symptom control
  • Risk assessments
  • Incident reporting
  • Palliative Care emergencies
  • Ethical issues
  • Spiritual care
  • Communication
  • Health & Safety updates

In addition, we provide a structured induction & orientation programme for all new staff with ongoing support provided through assigned mentors.

As members of the wider healthcare community in the West of Ireland, we also provide training and education in specialist palliative care to Nursing Home staff as well as updates to local GP’s and Community Pharmacists.

Our staff are encouraged and supported to achieve further Postgraduate qualifications relevant to their area of work. In addition, some of our staff are guest lecturers at the National University of Ireland, Galway and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.

We accept student Healthcare Assistants who are undertaking their QQI courses, and we accept student nurses from Ireland and the EU for clinical placements.

In certain circumstances, we also accept medical students from overseas who wish to gain experience in a specialist palliative care environment.  If you are interested in one of these placements, please send your enquiry to Dan Keane, Standards & Practice Development Coordinator at dkeane@galwayhospice.ie

Galway Hospice is also recognised by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland as an approved centre for the training of Specialist Registrars in Palliative Medicine.  We are also recognised by the Royal College of General Practitioners in Ireland as an approved centre for the training of GP students.  For any enquiries in this regard, please contact the Clinical Director via info@galwayhospice.ie
