As an organisation with a huge focus on quality management systems, providing internationally accredited standards of care, the ongoing training and education of our staff is of paramount importance.
Ongoing education and training are fundamental to providing quality care. Individually, through our annual Performance and Professional Development Reviews, we identify any education or training needs for individual staff, and we set priorities for achievement within the following year. Corporately, we provide group in-house training for our staff across a wide range of subjects and topics, such as:
- Medication management
- Pain and symptom control
- Risk assessments
- Incident reporting
- Palliative Care emergencies
- Ethical issues
- Spiritual care
- Communication
- Health & Safety updates
In addition, we provide a structured induction & orientation programme for all new staff with ongoing support provided through assigned mentors.
As members of the wider healthcare community in the West of Ireland, we also provide training and education in specialist palliative care to Nursing Home staff as well as updates to local GPs and Community Pharmacists.
Our staff are encouraged and supported to achieve further Postgraduate qualifications relevant to their area of work. In addition, some of our staff are guest lecturers at the University of Galway and Atlantic Technological University (ATU).
If you are interested in one of these placements, please send your enquiry to Dan Keane, Standards & Practice Development Coordinator at dkeane@galwayhospice.ie
